Inland to Dunkeld

A long drive inland away from the coast through rolling countryside with very few towns and most of those we saw were almost ghost towns with faded architecture from more prosperous times: silo murals have become a new art form.

The kids pictured were from the local school.
We went to Dunkeld, on the edge of the Grampians range for hiking and to stay at the Royal Mail hotel with a famous restaurant and cellar albeit we stayed in their rustic refurbished cottage a mile away with great views over the Grampians; plus many Roos in the meadow outside !

Our very rustic cottage : no wifi !

We walked two days, quite stiff hikes to prepare for the 12 Apostles; the Pinnacle hike was clear :

Lichen
our second hike up Mount Abrupt gave us our first view of the smoke haze drifting in from the forest fires.

We had a delicious tasting menu at the Wickens restaurant (2 hats) and then a tour of the veg and fruit gardens with an English chef the next morning. they certainly know their onions! Managed to spot the emus nearby too!
