To Port Arthur and Harpers Beach

We retraced our steps back up the Island and the Neck, managing to avoid any queue for the ferry, then drove to Hobart to visit Mount Wellington. A winding drive up it's dirt road, 1,300 meters to the top and the view points overlooking the city.

Back down, through Hobart and  east through flatlands with a series of longbow bridges over large stretches of water until we arrived at our little Air B&B, in the garden of a very attractive period beach house overlooking Harpers Beach. A lovely walk along the beach at dusk. Dinner was in the house with the other guests.
The next day we had our visit to the Port Arthur Penal Colony, one of the most notorious of the penal settlements. We saw it from the sea first, on a boat trip.

We thought the tour might be rather grim, but whilst moving, it was ok and the setting is beautiful.A nice touch was that on the tour, each guest was given a playing card with a picture of one of the convicts on it, for you to take to a gallery with biographies of each convict portrayed on the cards.
Dinner was another BBQ outside our little beach shack.

Our final day in Port Arthur and our last kayak of the trip with Roaring 40's. This was sea kayaking in a fair sized ( 1.5 Meter ) swell for the day with a lot of paddling.

Along the way we saw a seal colony, an albatross and a lonely penguin. We were also to paddle through  a well known local landmark, in between  two cliff pinnacles but after a good look at it, it was decided the swell was too much of a risk.

The swell was on the other side !
